Human Rights in Tibet: Experts vow to respect historical customs of the reincarnation of living Buddhas

Multiple researchers and scholars have pledged to respect the historical customs of the reincarnation of living Buddhas in Tibet. Their promise came during a webinar hosted in Beijing on the sidelines on the 51st UN Human Rights Council Session. Several experts shared their views on Chinese sovereignty, human rights in Tibet, and the legitimacy of the Dalai Lama who authorities say attempted to stage a coup in 1959.

ZHANG YUN Senior Fellow, Institute of History China Tibetology Research Center"Politically, the 14th Dalai Lama is constantly weakening, and even denying the historical facts of the central government's management of Tibet. A large number of Tibetan historical materials prove Tibet has been a part of China since ancient times."

XIAO JIE Deputy Director, Institute of Contemporary Studies China Tibetology Research Center"The country can choose its own religion and manage its own religious affairs. That is the context of sovereignty. It is the absolute power for the Chinese government to manage its own religious affairs, including the reincarnation of the living Buddhas."
